A healthcare law scholar, Afifa Waheed (FRSA) earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2016 from the UK. She further trained as a Barrister of England & Wales (Lincoln’s Inn) in 2017 at City, Univ of London, and completed her Executive Program at Oxon. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), a member of the Human Rights Lawyers Association, England and the American Intellectual Property Law Association in the US. She is a Duke University School of Law Master of Laws graduate, Class of 2023. Waheed co-founded a healthcare NGO, based in Dhaka and has nearly 10 years of experience in advocacy, research and policy making. She has authored articles for leading publications and has been highlighted by major media.

At Duke, she served as a Research Assistant to Professor Brandon Garrett and at the Wilson Centre for Science and Justice. She further received a pro bono award for her public service work in the Health Justice clinic. Ms. Waheed completed a research paper on “COVID 19 and Biotechnology Companies” under the supervision of Prof. Arti Rai. She has represented clients in regulatory, healthcare and malpractice matters in New York City.

Previously, she worked as an advisor at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations, New York. She shadowed English High Court Judges (UK) (KCs) on high profile cases. She was appointed a mentor from Blackstone Chambers, Barristers (Chambers of the Year, 2019). She further held various research and governmental internship positions and worked with the District Attorney’s Office in New York, in the the Appeals Bureau, where she successfully assisted with COVID-19 immunity litigation.

Waheed has lived and worked in five countries and speaks over four languages. Over the years she has had the opportunities to sit down with refugees (including Rohingya refugees), healthcare professionals, environmental and civil society advocates, human rights activists, lawyers and judges, corporate personalities, UN representatives and diplomats, government employees and many others.

Afifa was also a keen competitive debater, both at school and at universities. She attended her first conference at the age of 13 in Kuala Lumpur. She was one of the best speakers of a number of competitions and a multi-year participant at the University of Oxford. She is trained in Adult First Aid, CPR/AED and used to be professional photographer in her early 20s.
